My Year with Oprah!!

My Best friend, Quencie, and I have had a blast this year.  Two exiting things that happened involved Oprah Winfrey.  We were blessed to have been chosen to attend the Best Friend's taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show on 4/11/11.  The show, which was filled with Best Friends, also featured Oprah's Best Friend, Gayle King.  During the show, Oprah gave everyone a fantastic trip to the Miraval Spa & Resort in Arizona (airfare, meals, transportation to and from the resort, and massages all paid for).  How lucky were we :-)  We also had the privilege of sitting 2 feet away from Oprah and Gayle in the 2nd row, center.  While there, many people raised their hands to ask Oprah a question.  Well, I knew that Quencie had an awesome question, so I raised my hand for her.  Right at that moment, Oprah called on me and I politely said, "My Best Friend has a Question."  The best part of this story is that, Quencie's question was so good that it was featured on - the only one chosen out of all of the questions asked.

Fast forward to 11/11/11 - Quencie and I were chosen to attend the taping of Oprah's Life Class with Iyanla Vazant in Los Angeles.  We sat in the front row right next to Oprah's sister, Patricia.  The show was amazing, as well as the final show of the season.  Quencie gave Oprah & Iyanla gifts that they were happy to receive.  And the best part of this story is that we were the only people that got to take a picture with Oprah.  God is indeed Good!  Look out for the next Oprah blog because the next story will be even better than the other two.

Post - Oprah Winfrey Show (Best Friend) Taping

Ok, so I did not wear what I thought I was going to wear. I didn't want to risk being "too busy" with my attire and being placed in the back of the studio. So,

I chose a bright orange top with my black skinny jeans and black boots.  Well, Quencie and I were seated in the 2nd row center - right in front of Oprah and Gayle.  Now, I don't know if it was my last minute change of wardrobe, or just God who put me there.  But knowing how I think - it was God :-).  The show was more than amazing!  Oprah and Gayle reminisced about old trips and adventures.  It was great seeing those clips and old pictures.  Gayle even shared one of her favorite treats with the audience - Monkey Bread!  It was sooooo good that I attempted to make some when I returned home. Well let me tell ya - #HUGEFAIL!!  Mine tasted nothing like Gayle's.  And, I am on a mission to find that Monkey Bread.  Another treat was that the entire audience received an all expense paid trip to the Miraval Spa Resort in Tuscon, AZ.  Plus, $100 worth of free Hanes "comfy" clothes for the trip.  The audience went wild.  Althoughbeit, I didn't know where Oprah said we were going.  All I knew was that she said we were going somewhere!  The Oprah Show visit was one of the best experiences of my life and I wish I could relive it all over again!  Before the show started, there were people who were crying upon entering the studio.  I was like, Good Lord, why are these people crying.  Quencie asked me would I cry, and I was like no.  Hey, I love, love, love Patti Labelle and Whitney Houston and I've never once cried over them.  And don't get me wrong, I LOVE Oprah too, but I couldn't see myself crying.  I'm just not that type of fan.  Well, as soon as Oprah walked onto the stage, the tears just started streaming from my eyes uncontrollably, and I could not stop them.  Quencie had to wipe my eyes.  I couldn't believe it.  Where did those tears come from???  Apparently, Oprah had an effect on me that I've never experienced before - let's just say it was magical :-)  I sure hope they don't have me on camera crying like a baby.

Well, after the show, Oprah and Gayle stayed around and answered questions from the audience.  I raised my hand and managed to get Oprah's attention and she called on me.  I, in turn, said that my Best Friend had a question.  Quencie asked a fantastic question: "On Master Class, Diane Sawyer said that you needed people in your life to help reinforce your best self.  How does Gayle help reinforce your best self?"  Oprah said that question was going to make her cry.  Well, she and Gayle went and for over 10 minutes answering that question.  It was definitely amazing to watch.

Well, I've given my take on this spectacular trip, but you can listen below for yourself to get me and Quencie's full story.  This Best Friend show airs 4/21/11 and I hope you tune in :-)

4 Days and Counting Until I Go to Oprah - What to WEAR???????

Ok, I am beyond excited, that even the mention of Oprah's name, an email that I receive from her newsletter (on a daily basis), or watching her show/network - makes me smile from cheek to cheek! I'm so giddy and I'm smiling so big right now! Now here's the deal - I wrote in a letter to Oprah about how my relationship with my Best Friend, Quencie, is just like that of Oprah's and Gayle's. And we were chosen to attend this taping based on being Best Friends - Woo Hoo!! Now, this is a serious situation because I live by the Oprah and Gayle friendship book. I always say to Quencie, "I wonder what Oprah and Gayle would do." Quencie's middle name, Timera, is pronounced like most people say my name, Tamara. Although my name is really pronounced TAM-A-RAH.  Well, Quencie has been my very best friend for 6 years now and no one, I mean NO ONE, has ever been the type of friend she has.  We talk on the phone everyday and every night before we go to bed. She's an interviewer and I'm a singer.  I didn't even know what it really meant to be a friend until I met her. Sure, in my mind I thought I was the greatest friend since slice bread.  But, that was based on fake relationships. You know, those relationships you have where you can't be fully honest, or you don't feel that comfortable to say what's really on your mind. Well, that was the extent of my other friendships - fake. Quencie showed me what a "Real" friend was all about.  Now, I ain't gonna lie, I didn't like it at all, not one!  It was so real and I was so not used to the truth. I was like, who is this girl and does she not know who I am?  I'm Tam, the GREATEST Friend of All Friends in the Universe and Beyond!!!! Quencie had no problem telling me when I hurt her feelings, did something wrong, didn't look right, and more.  Apparently, I was living in a plastic bubble where I thought I could do no wrong.  Well, instantly, Quencie became my reality check. And when I think about it, I can't thank her enough. It has definitely made me a better person.

Now back to the topic...4 MORE DAYS and I'm GOING TO THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOWWWWWW!!!! I have bought shoes, sent shoes back; bought more shoes, and sent more shoes back.  Quencie and I have been back and forth to the mall, and back and forth again!  I have contemplated this shirt or that shirt.  Maybe I should go out and buy more new shirts. Should it be skinny jeans, or boot cut jeans?? Do my shoes accent my jeans? Maybe I should just wear boots!  What about jewelry - gotta get the accessories!  Oh my hair!!!  I have to get my hair pressed as close to the tape day as possible because it needs to be freshly done. And if you're a black girl, you know about the press! Eyebrows waxed - tomorrow!  Mani/pedi - tomorrow! What I wear to this show will impact where I sit - I just know it. I thought, should I wear a solid, bright color? What if the shirt I'm wearing has too many designs on it or is too shiny - will they put me in the back??  Well, I don't want to be on the back of the bus!  This was on my mind constantly, day in and day out - that I was driving myself crazy. I sent my mom pictures of the shoes and shirts that I contemplated wearing. Quencie and I had fashion shows with our newly purchased items. We were all over the place. Must-Look-Good-For-Oprah! But, I had to finally release it because I live by the Secret, so I have claimed front row, center - right in Front of Oprah!

I am just so excited that I can hardly contain it. I wish that I could make a grand announcement at my job an let all 500 people know that I AM GOING TO THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOWWWWWWW!!!!! But until then, I'll just keep smiling from cheek to cheek. Thank you God!!!!!!  Stay tuned to the official Oprah Show Countdown done by Quencie and I on Studio Q Radio.

Here is my chosen shirt for Oprah! It looks fab when!

Trey Songz's Sexiness is in Full Effect!

So, I went to see Usher at Staples Center and Trey Songz opened up for him. I must admit, I was only familiar with a couple of his songs. And I was wondering why there was so much hype about him. Well, let me just soon as he hit the stage, the crowd went ballistic. I was confused as to who the real headliner of the show was because everyone was on their feet screaming. And as someone who doesn't like to be left out, I stood up as well! Trey "Sexy" Songz showed up to Staples Center with a mission to achieve - to have everyone in the building become a fan - and it worked! He put on a terrific and might I add, sensual show. I have officially been bit by the Trey Check out these videos of Trey Songz doing his thing...

I Need More, More More...Patti LaBelle!!

Ok, so I shared with you earlier a great concert performance of Patti Labelle (and band) singing Richard Smallwood's "Total Praise." Now, I've gotta share with you some of her classic hits like "If Only You Knew" and "Love, Need, and Want." Hey, you can never hear too much Patti (at least that's what I always say) :-)

Tina Turner - Gotta love her...

I must admit, I am truly fascinated by Ms. Tina Turner. Her style, grace and beauty captivates me. She is original; one of a kind. I have seen her in concert twice, and I hope that she does another tour. She really puts on a fantastic show. Who can incorporate soul and rock like she does? I last saw her at the Staples Center and the show was superb! I was a little scared for a minute when she started walking on this walkway across the audience. I would have never done it (seriously never, I am afraid of heights). But that was definitely a highlight of the show. Check out Tina "Simply the Best" Turner performing "Nutbush City Limits" and "Proud Mary"

I Love Me Some Patti Labelle

OK, so here's the deal. I love me some Patti LaBelle and have loved her since I was 12 years old. She is absolutely the GREATEST singer on the face of the planet. No one, I mean no one can even come close to this powerhouse vocalist. But, it's not only the voice that has me drooling, it's the passion and emotion that she exudes with each song. When she sings, she gives 150% and you hear it and feel it with each word. There are so many other talented and gifted singers like Whitney Houston (whom I also love and adore), but Ms. Patti is as real and geniune as they come. If you have not seen her perform, you are missing out on the most moving and touching performance you'll ever witness. And, she never sings a song the same way twice. For real! I have seen her in concert for the past 20 years (every year; sometimes 3x or more a year). I can't help it. She is like a drug and I must admit - I AM ADDICTED!!!!! Heyyyyyyy!!!!

Check out Ms. Patti singing "Total Praise" at Buffallo Bill's Casino! Just amazing!
